What is the BOPPPS framework?

BOPPPS is a systematic approach to lesson design developed by Douglas Kerr at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in the 1980s. It's used by thousands of instructors worldwide to create more effective, learner-centered lessons.

B

Bridge-In

Hook learner attention and connect to their existing knowledge or experiences. This could be a question, scenario, visual, or brief activity that creates curiosity and readiness to learn.

O

Objective

Clearly state what learners will know or be able to do by the end of the lesson. Make it measurable and learner-focused using action verbs (e.g., "Students will analyze...", "Participants will demonstrate...").

P

Pre-Assessment

Check what learners already know before teaching new content. This helps you adjust your approach, identify misconceptions, and meet learners where they are.

P

Participatory Learning

The main instructional activities where learners engage with content through discussion, practice, experiments, case studies, or problem-solving. This is active learning, not passive listening.

P

Post-Assessment

Check whether learners achieved the stated objectives. This could be a quiz, reflection, demonstration, or application task that shows what they've learned.

S

Summary

Reinforce key concepts, tie everything together, and provide next steps. Help learners see the big picture and understand how this lesson connects to future learning.

Why we built this tool

BOPPPS is a powerful framework, but most educators plan lessons in Word docs or scattered notes. We wanted to create something that makes BOPPPS easy to use without sacrificing flexibility or privacy.

🎯 Structure without rigidity

BOPPPS provides a proven framework, but every lesson is different. This tool guides you through the stages while letting you adapt to your context, subject, and learners.

🤖 AI as a co-pilot, not autopilot

We believe AI should augment—not replace—educator expertise. The AI Prompt Generator helps you brainstorm ideas faster, but you remain in full control of what goes into your lesson.

🔒 Privacy by design

Your lesson plans contain sensitive information about your students, teaching approach, and institutional context. We store nothing on servers—everything stays in your browser.

💸 Free forever

Education shouldn't be locked behind paywalls. This tool is free to use, no account required. If you find it valuable, you can support continued development—but it's never required.

Who made this?

This tool was created by an educator who got tired of juggling Word documents, sticky notes, and scattered lesson plans. After discovering BOPPPS and seeing its impact on teaching effectiveness, I wanted to make it more accessible.

As someone who teaches at the university level and works with instructional design, I've seen how structured frameworks like BOPPPS help instructors—especially new ones—design more effective lessons. But I also saw that most BOPPPS resources were just PDFs or templates, not interactive tools that could grow with you.

This planner combines research-backed instructional design with modern web technology to create something that's actually useful in day-to-day teaching preparation.

Note: This is a personal project, not affiliated with any institution or the original BOPPPS developers. It's built as a labor of love for the teaching community.
